Jiang's shadow follows Zhu; Chinese media play down Premier's U.S. visit

Article Abstract:

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji is conducting a six-city tour of the US but his presence in the country is being downplayed by the Chinese media. He gets second billing only to the mundane activities of former Premier Li Peng and Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin. The care taken by the Chinese media is an effort to prevent Zhu's upstaging of his boss, Jiang. Jiang faces the blame of letting the ties between US and China unravel and allowing his subordinate to improve the relations between the two countries.

Beijing condemns U.S. raids and demands they cease; China seeks to maintain sound relations with Iraq, mindful of future business in oil industry

Article Abstract:

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi criticized the US launching of missile raids against Iraq and called for an immediate halt to the military attacks. Sun's criticism was limited to the US despite the fact that both the US and the UK were involved in the attacks. China's interference can be attributed to its desire to maintain sound relations with Iraq. It relies heavily on oil imports from the Persian Gulf and is expected to increase its reliance on net oil import by 2000.
