Judgment of Paris

Article Abstract:

Bilateral aid donors will be asked to allot $600 million for India when they meet in Paris, France, on Jun 24, 1992. India can already expect over $6 billion in aid, credits and commercial loans from various sectors, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank in spite of perceptions of India's susceptibility to economic and foreign pressures, as well as natural phenomena. To be accorded the financing, however, India may be constrained to commit to economic, social and military reform.

Ides of March

Article Abstract:

India's greatest short-term economic problem as elections approach is its persistent inflation, reflected in a wholesale price index up 11.5% year-on-year in Jan 1995. That has helped keep the stockmarket bearish, but foreign investment continues to be strong, with inflows of $6.5 billion in 1994 outstripping a predicted $1 billion current-account deficit for the year to Mar 31. The trade deficit has tripled in the past year to $2 billion in the Apr-Dec period. Overall GDP growth is around 5.3% to 5.5%.

Step on it: India's car makers are set to accelerate

Article Abstract:

Car makers in India and their overseas partners are planning large investments and rapid expansion to make the country's industry competitive throughout the region. European, US, and South Korean manufacturers have teamed up with local ones and several already have models for sale. Overall, car sales could rise 25% annually through 2001. Even as tariffs fall companies step up their localization plans, trying to avoid the trap of the rising yen or the falling rupee.
