Jungle treasures: Sabah seeks to exploit and conserve its natural resources

Article Abstract:

Eco-tourism may help Sabah state in East Malaysia to preserve its jungle while providing local residents with a living. The jungle's beauty and fascinating wildlife such as orangutans could entice tourists away from the beaches and shopping centers found elsewhere in Asia. Moreover, eco-tourism could prove a more economically sound method of saving the jungle than creating wildlife parks and reserves. Such tourism would have to be carefully regulated to avoid ecological damage and would require the training of natives as guides to help tourists appreciate the jungle's complexity.
