Think twice: Hanoi looks to aid agencies

Article Abstract:

Vietnam hopes to improve its relations with the US in order to get funding from the World Bank, IMF, the Asian Development Bank and other multilateral lending agencies. The Asian country has proven to be self-sufficient since the former Soviet Union cut off its subsidy. However, Vietnam has to alter its bureaucracy and should be wary of these lending institutions to develop its economy. It should rid itself of corruption and inefficient management and planning in order to use the new subsidies effectively.

Hanoi's new scourge

Article Abstract:

Vietnamese authorities and citizens are deeply concerned about the growing drug abuse problem in Hanoi city. Illegal drugs trafficking is being used by government officials to argue against Western economic concepts and their influence over Vietnam's market reforms. Many blame the reforms for the rapid influx of drugs from Thailand and Laos. Heroin is inexpensive and costs $2.75 for 20 milligrams. Crime preventative measures are having little impact on the problem.
