Article Abstract:

The City Road Surgery designed by architects Hodder Associates for doctors in an inner-city area of Manchester, UK, had to meet the conflicting demands of being safe, secure, patient-friendly, wheelchair-friendly and offering a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere as well as privacy. Physical security formed an integral part of the design brief, with features including brises-soleil which act as security grilles as well as maximising solar gain.

Building study: A magical object that harks back to the strangeness of the travelling circus or theatre show

Article Abstract:

The Horse + Bamboo Travelling Theatre has designed the pPOD, their mobile theatre, as 'a magical space and object which linked back to the strangeness of earlier travelling circus or theatre shows'. The pPOD, which can be installed in 90 minutes, has an outer fabric made of PVC-coated polyester sheeting, while the inner fabric forms the opaque enclosure to the auditorium and stage and the floor is made of a demountable aluminum frame.
