Keener to be greener

Article Abstract:

An English planning authority is investigating the issue of sustainability through studying its implications for a school. The design of the school was the first part of this process. The use of renewable energy sources proved more difficult. Experts examined the potential use of four technologies. They did not consider biomass energy to be feasible. Three options for photovoltaics each had payback periods of over 200 years. Two alternative combinations of wind power and solar water heating offered good solutions, but were too costly for the school and did not satisfy all its energy needs.

Future looks rosy for construction under Labour

Article Abstract:

There would be a rise in output in all construction sectors under a Labour government according to forecaster Jacqui Cannon of Construction Forecasting and Research, speaking at the Construction under Labour seminar. However the rise would only be partly attributed to the advent of a Labour government, with investment for growth from the industry itself. Public housing work and infrastructure would see growth and there would be a more flexible approach to mortgages.
