'Stigma' biggest obstacle to sustainable housing

Article Abstract:

Delegates at a conference on sustainable housing were told that major barriers to sustainable housing are the stigma of living in social housing, and government deference to the needs of the economy. Sustainability was defined by Roger Levett, director of sustainable develpoment at CAG Consultants, as the integration of society and the environment, using the economy has a tool to achieve it. Demand for social housing in its current form is collapsing in many areas, according to Chris Withnail, group director of Sanctuary Housing Association.

Designs on Gateshead: Dominic Williams, design director of the Baltic Flour Mills project and associated in Ellis Williams, has only just begun

Article Abstract:

Dominic Williams, an architect and associate in Ellis Williams, was in his late twenties when he won an open competition to design a new cultural building. He is the architect of the Northern Arts Centre in Gateshead's Baltic Flour Mills, and his project has just received Arts Lottery funding. Other projects he has been involved in include a new school building in London's Victoria.

BRE sets its sights on a sustainable future

Article Abstract:

The BRE is seen as central to the future of the construction industry, according to John Gummer, speaking at the organisation's birthday dinner. The theme of the anniversary conference was sustainability, and Peter Hall, a planning professor spoke of a sustainable future which could only be achieved along channels defined by a regional TGV system.
