Why the swinging had to stop: the Twentieth Century society's 1960s conference discussed the legacy of the decade and its reputation as a golden age for architecture

Article Abstract:

Speakers at the Twentieth Century Society conference on the 1960s included architect Peter Smithson, Patrick Hodgkinson and Michael Manser, focusing on his steel houses. Some saw the 1960s architectural scene as divided between good architects and those working for the commercial sector, and new types of developers, such as Clore, Hyams and Cotton. Rodney Gordon, with a background in the LCC, recalled how the commercial sector represented an antithesis of creative architecture. He worked with Owen Luder and talked of the practice, which was one of the more interesting commercial practices during the 1960s.

Consistently inconsistent: Jean Nouvel sees architecture as a reflection of a world full of chance and unpredictability

Article Abstract:

Jean Nouvel claims to be a contextual architect although he has received criticism of his designs for the Cartier Foundation in Paris which was designed around a much revered cedar tree. Nouvel also designs furniture and currently works with several furniture manufacturers. Other designs include the Hotel Saint-James near Bordeaux which comprises a group of barns built of rusting metal.
