Setting up a European works council

Article Abstract:

Pan-European worker information and consulting groups began to appear in 1992, led by companies such as France's Pechiney and Volkswagen of Germany. In 1994, the European Union (EU), excluding the UK, adopted a new directive governing Europe-wide consultative councils, which should be integrated into national laws by end-1996. The new rules apply to companies operating in more than one EU state and with a minium of 1,000 employees. Many companies are establishing works councils while they still have the freedom to choose their ideal formats and before they are imposed at national levels.

Subsidiarity and its effects on business

Article Abstract:

Subsidiarity in the context of the European Community is the regulation of power and its division between different levels of government. The political principle is likely to govern the European business environment for years to come and was included in the Maastricht Treaty on European Union. Subsidiarity as a regulatory principle within the European Community is likely to be beneficial for business and is already being implemented in many policy areas.
