Keep on trying

Article Abstract:

Turkey intervened in Cyprus in Jul 1974, and the issue of a settlement for the island is still important in Jul 1999, though the leaders of the Greek and Turkish parts of Cyprus are reluctant to talk to each other. One suggestion is for the leaders to meet through the United Nations in the US in Oct 1999. Both parts of Cyprus could then be eligible to join the European Union (EU). There is hope that the incentive of EU membership will help to break the deadlock, though Turkish support for a settlement would also help.

Keep on purring

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government argues that it is not concerned about executive pay, and this represents a change in attitude. The gap between top pay levels and those of ordinary workers has widened, and this is especially true for larger companies. The government is hoping that stockholders will control levels of executive pay, though they have tended not to do so. This could change, and companies may have to justify high pay levels for directors and senior managers.

Thank you and goodbye

Article Abstract:

Chief executives can see a rapid erosion of their power, and it is becoming more common to sack poorly performing chief executives in the US and Britain. Hostile takeovers were used to remove such chief executives in the 1980s, but this has changed in the 1990s as directors have become more willing to sack their bosses. There has also been more willingness to challenge bosses among institutional investors, who previously simply sold their holdings.
