The guides to the architecture of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland first produced by Nikolaus Pevsner are now viewed much more critically than they were when the original texts were first updated, according to Bridget Cherry, who has edited all four series since 1991. She must seek to balance comprehensiveness against affordability, and must ensure that the latest editions reflect growing public interest in subjects such as industrial and agricultural buildings. She has gained recognition as an authority in her own right, and is an English Heritage commissioner.

Some believe it is essential that architects should be able to undertake design calculations for simple structures, although other believe that an architect cannot take responsibility for such calculations. There is a wide range of literature available for architects about structural design which would be of benefit to architects, who are often wholly dependent on the contribution of structural engineers in the design of a building.
