King Silvio's troubled realm

Article Abstract:

The seemingly endless success of media and retail mogul Silvio Berlusconi in countless business endeavors seems to have grinded to a halt. His conglomerate, Fininvest SpA, reported a consolidated net bottom line of 61.3 billion lira (L) in 1991, down from L190.5 billion in 1990, a decrease of 67%. On the other hand, its debt reportedly reached L3,900 billion while its capital amount to a little more than L1 trillion only. Meanwhile, his effort to establish a media empire across Europe is encountering various difficulties. Troubles with the print publishers and legislators are also plaguing him at home. On the plus side, however, the Italian government has awarded him three of 12 new nationwide television broadcasting licenses. Finally, Berlusconi's eradication of the state monopoly in broadcasting and creation of the television advertising industry attest to his continuing power and influence in Italy, both in business and in politics.

Whirlpool makes a splash

Article Abstract:

US market leader Whirlpool Corp entered the European white goods market in 1988 by acquiring a stake into Philips Electronics white goods subsidiary. In 1990, it took full control of the joint venture and established itself as Europe's second largest white goods maker. Whirlpool has embarked on an expansion program aimed at challenging the dominance of Electrolux AB, which holds a 23% market share of the European market, as compared to Whirlpool's 12%. The intensified competition between the two companies is expected to speed up the consolidation of Europe's fragmented white goods market.
