Kingfisher's new song

A planned merger has been announced involving Kingfisher and Asda which would create a retail conglomerate. Analysts see defense as the key issue, rather than cost savings. Kingfisher aims to prevent the entry of Wal-Mart into the United Kingdom, and aims to become the European version of Wal-Mart. Asda stores are large enough to be used as hypermarkets. Asda also has logistics skills as well as valuable real estate. The merger will strengthen the buying power of the new group. Kingfisher's stock price dropped after the plan was announced.

French fusion

Article Abstract:

Carrefour and Promodes plan to merge. Mergers are one way for French retailers, restricted by 1996 legislation, to grow, and the two companies are also concerned about competition from Wal-Mart. Other French retailer could follow this example, and there have been stock price rises in anticipation of possible acquisitions. There is still some concern in France about concentration in the retail industry and its impact on food processors and farmers.
