A new twist to an old tale

Article Abstract:

There are some one million Mapuche Indians in Chile, of a total population of 15 million, and around 50% of the Mapuche live in southern Chile, in traditional homelands. There are conflicts between the Mapuche and forestry companies which started operations on a large scale in the 1970s, aided by subsidies from the dictatorship of General Pinochet. Wood and pulp have come to account for 10% of the export earnings of Chile, but the Mapuche are concerned the water supplies have been affected. They are also driven away if they seek to collect firewood, and few local people are employed by forestry companies.

Forest fears

Article Abstract:

There are concerns about forest conservation in Central Africa where the largest amount of rainforest is located, after the Amazon region. The forest is endangered by logging, and could disappear by 2020 if trends continue. Presidents of the countries involved have promised to conserve the forests, but the wider public has yet to appreciate the need for conservation. Environmentalists have succeeded in persuading the government to implement conservation measures in one part of Cameroon, and this has meant job losses.
