Knocking at APEC's door: India is among the nations seeking admission

Article Abstract:

India is among a dozen or so countries that are seeking membership to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). APEC's goal to eliminate trade barriers in the region by the year 2020 complements the country's efforts to promote free trade and reduce protectionism. However, the 18-member group has a temporary moratorium on admitting new members. Although the three-year moratorium ends in 1996, criteria for new membership could take years to formulate. Current member-nations are also not too keen on expanding the group's membership.

Taiwan is favored by Japanese as site for relocation of high-tech production

Article Abstract:

More Japanese companies are expressing interest in setting up facilities in the already crowded Science-based Industrial Park in Taipei, Taiwan. The park, which was established in 1980 to attract foreign investment, will be the site of three new Japanese projects. Prior to the coming of the Japanese, US-based firms accounted for the bulk of investments in the park. Some Japanese companies are also establishing factories in other parts of Taiwan.

New Web site provides on-line link to overseas-Chinese business networks

Article Abstract:

Overseas-Chinese have traditionally kept tabs on each other through informal business networks. Singapore's Chinese Heritage Center has put a modern spin on this by creating an online compendium of ethnic-Chinese companies all over the world. The 'World Chinese Business Network' on the Internet's World Wide Web not only provides information on these companies but allows users to contact them as well.
