Lake Folly

Article Abstract:

Inya Lake Hotel near Rangoon now competes with the refurbished Strand, and has embarked on a refurbishment and repositioning to help it attract guests different from its former East Bloc habitues. Built by Russians in 1961, the Inya Lake has a cavernous and institutional feel exemplifying socialist planning. A $9 million face-lift has given it a more elegant overlay, but it cannot compete with the Strand in sophistication or redolence of the late 19th century. It is far less expensive, however, and has its own character.

How Socal Avoided Drowning in a Lake of Unwanted Oil

Article Abstract:

Standard Oil Co. of California (Socal) is chaired by George M. Keller. Keller is a midwesterner who feels economic forecasters of the last few years have been inept. Their predictions of world economic and energy trends have been totally inaccurate. Socal cut its operating revenues drastically and closed some of its refineries. It has divested itself of a synthetic fibers plant and reduced its inventories. A cash flow improvement program is underway. Research spending is up. Shale oil processing is a priority.
