Language debate rekindled

Article Abstract:

Philippine President Joseph Estrada's announcement to make Filipino rather than English as the language used in official business has disturbed foreign investors and created disorder among lawmakers and bureaucrats. Currently, English is used to teach science and mathematics while history and social science are taught in Filipino. Representative Joker Arroyo challenged the president's right to change the use of language, claiming the matter is a legislative one.

Philippines pulls out stops to host APEC summit

Article Abstract:

The Philippines will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on Nov. 1996. APEC Business Advisory Council Chmn. Roberto Romulo is confident that the summit will enhance the country's business image. However, summit organizers are faced with the daunting task of holding a successful international event. The 54 executives who comprise the APEC Business Advisory Council have been invited to meet with 18 heads of state in the region.

U.S. maker of Lee jeans loses case over name trademark in Philippines

Article Abstract:

H.D. Lee, which is a subsidiary of VF Corp., has lost its case in the Philippines involving a complaint against Filipino firm Emerald Garment Manufacturing Corp. for copying the brand name of its jeans and confusing consumers. The Filipino court's decision worries many potential investors because of the perception that trademark laws are not being seriously considered in the country.
