Laos is looking like a gold mine to foreigners

Article Abstract:

Spurred on by a global boom in commodities prices, mining companies are investing in gold and copper operations in Laos. Two such projects by Australian companies Oxiana Ltd. and Pan Australian Resources NL represent the country's largest foreign investments ever. Though the extent of Laos' mineral resources is still not clear, experts are optimistic given the country's proximity to other mineral-rich nations.

BHP raises mine outlook: new resources data may double forecast for project's output

Article Abstract:

Expansion at BHP Billiton Ltd.'s Olympic Dam uranium and copper mine could double after the firm increased its resources there. An intensive drilling project is ongoing. The site's contained resource currently consists of 2.25 mil metric tons of uranium and 67 mil tons of copper, as compared with last year's figures of 1.77 mil and 48.7 mil tons respectively.

Miner Anglo American taps an outsider for its CEO post

British mining company Anglo American PLC has appointed an American, Cynthia Carroll, as its new CEO. Ms. Carroll's appointment makes her the highest- profile woman in the natur al resources industry, as well as the first non-British CEO of the company.
