Laos is now ready to join Asia's tigers

Article Abstract:

Laos is intent on joining the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the instability of Myanmar and Cambodia should not be allowed to cloud the membership potential of Laos. The Laos economy has been steadily improving and the government has implemented reforms and institutions in preparation for its inclusion into the ASEAN. The inclusion of Laos in the ASEAN is paramount in maintaining and improving the economic growth of the country.

Retailers in Japan stand to make gains

Article Abstract:

Policy makers in Japan are hoping the comprehensive stimulus package that was launched in April 1998 will trigger consumer spending and revive the stagnating economy. If successful, the Japanese retailers would have so much to gain. Nonetheless, the risks remain high, and retailers have been pummelled by the phlegmatic economy. According to a senior retail analyst, it would take an aggressive rebound to transform retailers into growth firms.

Beijing's one-legged reforms may trip up growth

Article Abstract:

China's economic reforms need the support of political reform to be successful. The recent meeting of Chinese leaders that discussed the direction of political and economic policy has resulted in the strengthening of the proposals of the late Deng Xiaoping. It is highly unlikely that economic reforms would run smoothly in the absence of sound politics but this is what the Chinese leadership is advocating.
