Region's slump can pave roads to reform, recovery

Article Abstract:

Infrastructure development is expected to help many Asian economies survive the battering brought by the currency crisis in the region. Infrastructure projects has the potential to jump-start an economy by its ability to provide jobs, attract investments and consequently effect a flow of money as well as enabling a review of prudent fiscal policies, both on the government and private sectors. Asian economies are expected to begin their recovery using infrastructure projects as a launching pad, both to address shortfall in facilities and immediately provide the needed pieces in economic recovery.

Japan can't escape market discipline

Article Abstract:

Japanese companies lack market discipline and fail to take into consideration the bottom line in their funding mechanism. The inability to enforce simple capital market-enforced financial controls is at the core of Japan's economic woes. This has served to create a private sector that has very little concern over profitability or efficiency. Thus, despite their acknowledged manufacturing expertise and exquisite engineering capabilities, the Japanese are unable to enforce performance measures.
