Large but perfectly formed: Not many practices make it through to their fourth generation of partners, and it is even rarer for one to survive with its architectural integrity intact

Article Abstract:

Sheppard Robson architects is a large firm covering architecture, interior design and town-planning. The practice has won awards from the start and its recent deisgn-led projects include the Moorgate Helicon, and the Motorola 'gun'. The practice was founded by Richard Sheppard in 1938,joined by Geoffrey Robson in 1950. They specialized in schools, designing 80 in the 1950s, and developed a readily recognizable style resulting from the use of rough textured brick and concrete. By the 1970s the practice included William Mullins, John Heywood, Bill Morris and Gordon Taylor. The Glaxo Wellcome research campus at Stevenage was a major project.

Strength through delegation

Article Abstract:

Sir Stirrat Johnson-Marshall and Sir Robert Matthew were the founding fathers of RMJM architectural practice and they believed that architecture was an apolitical and independent professional service to society. Sir Robert Matthew was appointed as professor of architecture at Edinburgh University, and an office was then opened in the city. There was an early falling out between the two men over the principles of profit sharing, and there was an inherent tension between them. However they both wanted to delegate responsibility to younger colleagues, and offered them unreserved support.
