According to a recent survey, seven out of ten firms in the clothing industry in Belgium admitted that they had relocated part of their output capacity in foreign countries, from 47% in 1993, with subcontracting operations accounting for 70%. Eastern Europe is the preferred destination (44%) followed by Northern Africa with 25%. Belgium, where labour accounts for almost 70% of the total added value in the clothing industry, was hit by the crisis in the 1970s and the fall of the Berlin wall. On 30 June 1997, this industry reported a 20,885 staff, 40% less than in 1990, 80% less than in 1972.

L'Air liquide ferme son usine de Schelle
Article Abstract:
French industrial gas producer L'Air Liquide is to shut down its Belgian plant of Schelle which employs 53 employees. L'Air Liquide has received a refusal from local authorities to upgrade its local installations due to pollution problems. The company is considering setting up a new plant in Belgium but local authorities are reported to be reluctant in welcoming the industrial gas producer due to possible environment problems.
