Learning comes of age

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government stressed education in its election campaign, and is stressing adult education through a scheme that could effectively involve vouchers. There have been changes in education, more of which is taking place outside classrooms. Meanwhile, the government has set up a University for Industry which will coordinate new learning centers, often in non-tradiotional locations. The government is also launching an Individual Learning Account which will allow individuals to receive funds for education if they place an initial sum.

Article Abstract:

The UK government's plans to increase the number of 'faith-based' schools owes much to a belief in the quality of such schools. However, evidence suggests that overall, church schools do not perform all that well, and that the success of many church schools may be due to their selection policies.

Keep out the priests

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister Tony Blair's plans to give more funding for schools run by 'faith-based organisations' has sparked much outrage. Many people believe that state funding should not be used for schools which discriminate on religious grounds.
