Lees give way: Prime Minister Goh consolidates his power

Article Abstract:

Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's cancer affliction has strengthened the position of Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. Goh's taking over as secretary-general of the People's Action Party (PAP) has also weakened Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Goh has resigned his parliamentary seat and is standing for a by-election scheduled by him for Dec 19, 1992. The by-election will boost his position and fulfil the electoral promise made by him to voters. He has further consolidated his position by reinstating S. Dhanabalan, an adversary of Lee Hsien Loong, into the cabinet.

Crack in the cabinet: Premier differs with Lee Kuan Yew

Article Abstract:

Singapore's PM Goh Chok Tong disagrees with senior minister Lee Kuan Yew about reinstating former education minister Tony Tan into the cabinet. Lee eventually wanted his son, Deputy PM Lee Hsien Loong, to be Singapore's PM, but the latter's cancer problem has made his political future bleak. Lee, therefore, wanted to bring Tan back into the cabinet to weaken Goh. But Goh recently held a by-election and won 72.9% of the votes. This has strengthened his position, and Goh is now planning to consolidate his power.

Legal logjam

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong of Singapore is planning to curtail the number of lawyers in Singapore. Goh has not formulated any legal policy to stop new lawyers from entering the profession, but he has appointed a committee to assess the problem. Opposition leaders claim that Goh has been politically motivated to limit the number of lawyers in Singapore, because legal experts have normally joined the opposition.
