Lessons to learn from Dutch housing innovation

Article Abstract:

Head of the UK construction directorate John Hobson visited the Dutch city of Almere to investigate whether its housing innovations are applicable in the UK. The Dutch began construction of the city on reclaimed land near Amsterdam in the 1960s. The current population is 130,000 with plans to expand this to 250,000 by 2015. The majority of the accommodation is social housing but there will be some luxury housing. The city does not yet include good local amenities, and the majority of inhabitants go elsewhere for employment. Hobson questioned whether people enjoy living in Almere.
