Letter from China

Article Abstract:

The September 1998 opening of a British designed exhibition in the China Natural History Museum, Beijing, was the culmination of two years work to promote the British way of life. The British Council and Royal Academy funded the exhibition which focused on the relationship between environmental and architectural issues facing towns in the UK. Chinese architectural students were given the opportunity to produce work which reflected the old ways of living with new developments, with the help of a group of British architects.

Show scores with its straightforwardness

Article Abstract:

The Helsinki Art Hall is hosting an exhibition called 'Alvar Aalto in Seven Buildings' until 29 March 1998, when it moves to the Architecture Institute, Rotterdam, from 15 May until 16 August. The exhibition in Helsinki has prompted a surge of interest in Finland's famous architect. Aalto designed more than 300 buildings but the exhibition focuses on seven of them. Each one is different and has a particular theme. There is an illustrated catalogue which provides visitors with an introduction to each exhibit.

Aalto in the shadow of MoMa's past

Article Abstract:

An exhibition entitled 'Alvar Aalto: Between Humanism and Materialism' is being held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York until 19 May 1998. Aalto's early designs for a sauna and a house are included and also the designs for the Turun Sanamat Building and Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium. The exhibition is uninspiring and does not give much indication of the methods Aalto used. The accompanying catalogue is more interesting and reflective.
