The road less taken

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for ordinary people in Japan to play an active role in managing their finances. Most Japanese have traditionally simply held their savings in deposits paying low rates of interest, but they are now seeking more attractive alternatives. Some are turning to foreign institutions which are offering higher-yielding financial products such as investment trusts and stocks. There are already 15 foreign investment companies active in Japan, and foreigners were managing more than $15 billion worth of funds in Japan as of Nov 30, 1997.
