Licensed to laugh

Article Abstract:

The Vietnamese monthly magazine Tuoi Tre Cuoi (Youth Laugh) is leading the way in satire in the country. The magazine, launched in 1984, sells 200,000 copies each month and has spawned a theatrical review which attracts a Saturday night audience of 1,000. The main satirical targets of the magazine are corruption, bureaucracy and the nouveau riche. The magazine maintains that its subject matter is social rather than political, and it rarely targets individuals. The communist government, keen to see criticism of corruption, has given indirect approval to the magazine's subject matter.

Epic savings: Indonesia's Ramayana rides cheap thrills to market

Article Abstract:

Indonesian department-store chain Ramayana Lestari Sentosa wins approval from analysts for sticking with a low-price strategy aimed at low-income consumers despite the pressures of a July 24 stockmarket listing. The company plans to use the expected $110 million to renovate old stores and erect 21 new, larger ones. The listing has faced a series of problems, including a store fire that killed ten and reinforced investors' concerns. However, stores pursuing a pricier market continue to flounder despite supposedly rising incomes.

Slow burn

Article Abstract:

Foreign oil and gas concerns have found it extremely difficult to negotiate exploration and production agreements in Vietnam. The government has made very slow progress on oil and gas projects, and some observers believe that Vietnam could begin to face serious energy shortages. This would in turn have a negative impact on industrial growth. If oil and gas projects do not get underway shortly, then Vietnam may be forced to use diesel power, which would prove very expensive.
