Lifetime homes grow up

Article Abstract:

A book, which is endorsed by UK Minister for Construction Nick Raynsford, develops the concept of the lifetime home. The concept, originally conceived by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and later incorporated into the Building Regulations as Part M, advocates designing homes to meet the needs of a wider section of the population. This would allow people to continue living in the same home throughout their lifetime without needing to make radical changes. The book, 'Meeting Part M and Designing Lifetime Homes' by Caitriona Carroll and others, aids application of the concept.

Studio vista

Article Abstract:

British architect Mark Dziewulski's Lakeside Studio building, Sacramento, California, compliments its setting and fulfills its design brief. The building is an extension to a house which was constructed in the 1960s and is owned by a wealthy businessman. It is intended to function as a place of work and relaxation, and as a building to display art. The design, which incorporates a large, glass-walled room cantilevered over a lake, makes spectacular use of both interior and exterior space, and perfectly suits the Californian lifestyle and climate.

Design for life

Article Abstract:

Two private houses built by developers David Harrison, in Bury St Edmunds, England, were highly praised by judges from the Housing Design Awards. The houses have been designed by Architects Hawkins/Brown. The building work had to incorporate a high flint and brick wall which may have bricks from medieval times at its base. The brickwork on the houses is made up of red bricks. Part of the roof is glazed which makes the buildings feel very light.
