Lifts, stairs and escalators

Article Abstract:

New legislation in the UK regarding lifts will place strong emphasis on the health and safety of all new lift installations and components. It will also seek to eliminate trade barriers between European Union member states. All new lift installations will have to meet a range of criteria, including having an overload device and a two-way communication system connected to a 24-hour manned call centre. There have been a number of significant developments in lift technology, but escalator technology appears to have stopped progressing, although continuous improvements are being made to existing technology.

Theme: heating, ventilation and energy management

Article Abstract:

Construction experts are aware passive cooling systems will not be sufficient ventilation for hot days. Therefore some architects are using mixed systems which combine air conditioning and passive cooling. The European Commission and the Bradford Metropolitan District Council are sponsoring work by the Bradford Energy Management Agency to look into reducing the amount of energy used for hot water and heating systems. The systems would be used by poorer families. The main concerns of the users of heating systems is their energy efficiency, comfort and size of the boiler.
