Linking new development to traffic generation: the deficiencies of the current methodology of Traffic Impact Analysis

Article Abstract:

Traffic management and traffic reduction have become increasingly significant features of transportation policy in the UK. However, it is clear that traffic growth will continue to occur in the short to medium term, leading to congestion and environmental damage. A wide range of policy instruments will be required to reduce vehicle usage, and planning authorities will still have to take account of traffic growth, regardless of whether they see this as desirable or not. Traffic Impact Analyses have proved ineffective for very large schemes because of deficiencies in their methodology.
