Article Abstract:

The Basque government is planning or managing several infrastructure projects for which it seeks private investors as well as contractors. These include urban transportation projects, motorway improvements, renovation of the port of Bilbao, and expansions of two large airports, one for passengers and one for freight. Companies and state bodies have created the Metropoli-30 agency to oversee and pursue a renovation of the city of Bilbao, historically a center of industry but now in need of new industries and an overall repositioning.

Important Basque industries include construction, car components, capital goods, and electrical household appliances. Anchor-chain and cable maker Vicinay has a joint-venture factory in China and exports much of its product to Asia. Other companies active in Asia, including Cegasa, Elecnor, Kemen, Mayc, Ingelectric, and Danobat, are discussed.
