Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton used a live broadcast on state television in China as an opportunity to call for US-style democracy to be established there. The fact that the Chinese authorities permitted the broadcast to be made indicates that they are more willing to allow discussion about political change. There was also a joint news conference between Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin, at which Jiang defended the actions of the Chinese authorities against those who call for democracy. Open discussion on this subject has not taken place before in China.

The fire within: Wei Jingsheng's prison letters raise his stature among Chinese intellectuals

Article Abstract:

Wei Jingsheng was sentenced to prison for 14 years for counter-revolutionary crimes in 1995. Beijing may have thought that this would silence his ideas, but a new compendium of his prison letters written during the 1979-93 imprisonment, has become available. Wei became the editor of Explorations, the Democracy Wall magazine, but was tried and sentenced to prison in 1979 for 15 years. The compendium includes several of his essays and pieces by guest writers.

Coming to get you

Article Abstract:

Former Chinese student leader Wang Dan, who has been held without charges for a considerable length of time, is now to stand trial for counter-revolutionary crimes. This comes at a time when there is no serious political protest in China and the government appears to have crushed the human rights and democracy movement. All important activists are now in prison or in exile, and the Chinese government appears to be focusing on minor dissidents.
