Fortress outside, friendly inside: Hallett and Pollard used their local experience to design Hartcliffe mini-town hall for Bristol City Council. It had to resolve the conflict of providing both open, welcoming public accessibility and a secure, vandal-proof environment

Article Abstract:

The new mini-town hall in Hartcliffe was designed by Hallett and Pollard to house 65 staff and up to 200 visitors a day. It was important to have open and welcoming public access, whilst ensuring a secure, vandal-proof environment. The structure is of steel and glulam frame and it is protected by prison-style fencing. The entrance is through an adapted steel silo and a mosaic has been created by local children. Internally it features full heigh glazed larch panels and a number of glazed meeting rooms located around the reception area.
