Living together

Article Abstract:

Outsiders occasionally comment on the racial homogeneity of the Asian nations but this is not factual. Minorities have existed in many Asian nations for many years, including Chinese in Malaysia, Koreans in Japan, and Indians in Singapore. They generally work hard and fulfill a need in their country's economy, but they are often resented. Recent atrocities against the Chinese in Indonesia, and against the Vietnamese in Cambodia, testify to the hatred which some indigenous people feel towards minority groups, a hatred which is sometimes implicitly supported by politicians.

What do women want?

Article Abstract:

The United Nations' Beijing conference on women threatens to overlook many important aspects of the roles women play in development. A development report prepared by economists and used as one basis for the conference looks only at jobs, wages, and literacy in determining women's welfare, rather than considering how many women deliberately and freely choose other activities that reduce the time for professional development. Furthermore, the report seems excessively influenced by Western ideologies of feminism.

Asian values, Asian valuations

Article Abstract:

The economic crisis in Asia has served to highlight the sometimes very unfair ways in which Asian values were operating. Asian values such as thrift, strong family ties and hard work are positive in themselves, but in many cases were being applied in a negative way. They were particularly damaging when backed up by public systems that focused on creating wealth rather than redistributing it. Asian values are still valid, but the economic crisis has exposed the shortcomings of some of those who applied them.
