Finance firm Nomura Securities is among the first Japanese companies to respond to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's call for better integration. It has hired former Singapore Technologies Industrial Corp chief Wong Kok Siew to head its Singapore operations, the first in a planned series of moves to create a more local feel in overseas offices. Nomura executives admit they have lagged their US competitors in knowing what regional customers want, best learned by hiring well-connected insiders.

Bear Stearns to partner wiith Chinese retailer

Article Abstract:

Bear Stearns Companies Inc. of the United States is to invest in China through a partnership with one of the wealthiest Asian entrepreneurs. The securities interest is to contribute $500 million to form a private equity fund that targets the retail market. Mr. Huang Guangyu founded the largest electronics store chain in China, Gome Electrical Appliances Holding Ltd. of China.

TRI of Malaysia Defaults on Debt

Malaysia's Technology Resources Industries Bhd., which is the country's biggest cellular telephone firm, has defaulted on a convertible-bond issue. TRI, which previously had defaulted on a different debt issue, owes $531 million in debt to bondholders.
