Local heroes

Article Abstract:

The RIBA's Salaried Architects Group chose 'The Role of Local Authority Architects in a Changing Environment' as the first subject for two discussions with the general title 'Architecture with a social purpose?'. Speaker Ian Colquhoun went into detail about the positive aspects of local authority architecture, which was very strong in the 1960s and 1970s and is now declining under the pressure of privatisation and the recession. He stated that there is much untapped talent in council architects' departments in the UK, and compared this with the situation in other countries.

Small canvases that still astonish

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition of the works of Mondrian. This aims to trace the transition from his early works to his pure abstract paintings. At the beginning of his career, he was influenced by a number of contemporary avant-garde styles, including Expressionism and Divisionism. Later, he developed a mature style and produced works which are extremely powerful, even though they are only small.

Poor show for the profession

Article Abstract:

The exhibition of the best works from the Royal Institute of British Architects tenth international student competition is disappointing. There is no guidance for the visitor and few of the entries provide any explanatory material. The exhibits are poorly displayed and demonstrate a conformity and lack of challenge which is out of place in student work.
