Synthetic appeal

Article Abstract:

Synthetic-textile companies, Taiwan's second largest source of foreign exchange after electronics, are recovering well from years of decline. This is attributed partly to the increase in demand for synthetic fibres in China and Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Taiwan's listed producers of synthetic fibers such as Formosa Plastics Corp, Tong Hwa Synthetic Fiber Company Ltd and Nan Ya Plastics Co are enjoying modest to high earnings per share. Some of these companies have decided to increase their production capacities to meet the continued rise in demand.

Challenges of success

Article Abstract:

High property prices and excess liquidity also pose interlinked problems.

Enter the new banks

Sixteen new banks founded in Taiwan since early 1992 are the most important development in the country's banking system. The newcomers have taken over 5% of total deposits by offering advantageous interest rates and comfortable banking facilities. Hua Nan, Chang Hwa and First Commercial, Taiwan's three big state-controlled commercial banks, have lost most of these deposits.
