Locating and sizing road maintenance depots

Article Abstract:

A systematic and analytic review of decisions concerning the location and size of maintenance depots along the rural road network in Victoria, Australia was undertaken. A location model was utilized in the identification of location scenarios. Staff requirements, coverage and backup capabilities were estimayed based on these scenarios. The model indicated that the existing depots were logically located and suggested that new depots may be established in a few other towns. Moreover, the model demonstrated that the centralization of patrols into fewer larger depots would reduce operating costs.

Locating flow-capturing units on a network with multi-counting and diminishing returns to scale

Article Abstract:

The problem of finding the proper location of service facilities or flow-capturing units on a transportation network is examined. The goal is to maximize the total utilization of the services by customers travelling through their usual daily paths. The goal of minimizing the number of facilities to provide maximum total service consumption is also considered. Both problems are found to be NP-hard on general networks.
