Lockheed to build Asiawide system of cellular phones

Article Abstract:

The contract for the ASEAN Cellular System (ACes), a satellite mobile-telephone system that encompasses most of Asia, has been awarded to Lockheed Martin Corp. Using a satellite, ACes will allow people to use the same mobile phone and phone number while traveling across the Asian countries covered by the system. Lockheed won over Hughes Network Systems Co. Similar systems are being planned by a number of other global consortiums, which are expected to pose stiff competition to ACes.

Zee TV's founder takes new approach with move into mobile communications

Article Abstract:

A deal to establish a geostationary mobile-communications system has been forged by Zee TV founder Subhash Chandra's Afro-Asian Satellite Communications Ltd. with Hughes Aircraft Ltd. The agreement heralds Chandra's entry into the mobile communications sector and further affirms his goal of creating an international television network and dominating Hindi-language satellite television.

Total Access revises debt

Article Abstract:

Total Access Communication PCL seems to have gained lenient terms on a $537.7 mil debt restructuring after signing a deal with 50 bank creditors to enable Total Access to defer payment of its $537.7 mil in bank obligations. In return for stretching maturities of its foreign debts by up to six years, the creditors are enjoining the company to pay higher interest rates on its loans.
