Loss leader

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that Eduardo Cojuangco could once again take over the management of San Miguel Brewery Ltd. They say that the markets would be happy with this possibility, due to perceived inadequacies in the current management. Andres Soriano III took control of the company in 1986 with the intention of transforming it into a multinational company. Rapid regional growth in the early 1990s seemed to confirm the wisdom of Soriano's expansion into other Asian countries, but the overseas ventures made losses of $60 million in 1997 due to factors including the regional crisis.

San Miguel reprise: beer giant makes it three in a row

Article Abstract:

Beer titan San Miguel continues to top a list of Philippine corporate leaders that has changed little since Far Eastern Economic Review's 1995 REVIEW 200 survey. Continued overseas expansion contributed to its planned $1.6 billion investment during 1995 and 1996, and should soon generate 30% of the group's revenues. Still close behind is Jollibee Foods, ranked tops in innovativeness to meet customer needs, followed by an Ayala Corp that has shrugged off recent setbacks. Other top companies include ShoeMart and ABS-CBN Broadcasting.

Hard sell

Article Abstract:

First Pacific is seeking to purchase the 33% stake held by United Coconut Planters' Bank in Filipino brewing concern San Miguel, along with the 18% stake held by Eduardo Cojuangco. However, both these stakes have been sequestered by the Filipino government since the collapse of the Marcos regime. There has been a great deal of legal wrangling about this issue, but First Pacific Managing Director Manuel Pangilinan now hopes to offer the government a deal it will find too beneficial to oppose.
