Low-energy housing design

Article Abstract:

Research into energy conservation methods shows that houses can be designed to achieve high levels of conservation with little additional cost. The use of computer design programs and the introduction of energy labelling schemes is bringing energy design to the forefront of public housing design. The research points to several elements which can reduce energy consumption and, in combination, can achieve ratings of eight or nine on the National Energy Federation's scale. These include; wall, roof and floor insulation, boilers and their controls, ventilation, windows, lighting and total carbon dioxide output.

Airtight additions to the campus

Article Abstract:

Architect, Rick Mather Associates has designed two halls of residence at the University of East Anglia. The buildings incorporate modular, prefabricated bathrooms that were craned into position as the building progressed. They have also been designed to high standards of air-tightness to improve energy efficiency. The four storey buildings are of blockwork and concrete construction with an outer shell of Spectraglaze blocks and render. Each can accomodate 400 students.

Housing asssociation allocations to be linked to energy labelling

Article Abstract:

Housing assocaition are to be encouraged to achieve greater energy efficiency in newly built houses. Their capital allocations are to be linked to their ability to achieve an energy efficiency rating of eight or above on the National Home Energy Rating Scheme scale. The current avarage score is 7.4 and research shows that higher scores can be achieved at minimal cost.
