Proxy business: Umno to rely on corporate donations for its financing

Article Abstract:

The United Malays National Organization, Malaysia's dominant political party, has sold off its corporate assets in a move many see as a way for the party to deny conflict-of-interest charges while still receiving corporate financing. Party treasurer and front-runner for party leadership Anwar Ibrahim is seen as a reformist, and claims that even if Umno still receives corporate contributions the party will have no control over business activities. Some claim that even with good intentions Umno will likely dole out government contracts to its former companies, many of which are the largest in Malaysia.

The Musa enigma

Article Abstract:

Datuk Musa Hitam, former deputy premier of Malaysia, continues to be a contender for the Prime Minister's post despite his claim that he has retired from politics. Musa resigned as deputy prime minister in 1986, following a struggle for the control of the United Malays National Organization (Umno) between Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed, Tunku Razaleigh Hamzah and himself. Later, he made up with Mahathir and went to the UN as Malaysia's special envoy (1990-1992). Musa's supporters in Umno are hopeful that he will use his political expertise to become the Prime Minister.

Article Abstract:

A Malaysian government trust has become involved in another political scandal involving thepurchase of a condominium unit for its chairman, Tamrin Ghafar. The trust, Majlis Amanah Rakyat, is currently under investigation for its 1992 purchase ofmemberships in an upscale golf club. The affair has serious political implications since Tamrin is a member of Parliament and is also the son of Deputy PM Abdul Ghafar Baba. Abdul Ghafar is also the president of the golf club currently under investigation.
