Lufthansa's profit expanded 40% in '98 amid cost-cutting

Lufthansa announced a 40% improvement in its pretax profits in the 1998 year. The carrier's profits rose to more than 2.4 billion deutschemarks ($1.3 billion) for the year. Lufthansa's revenues also increased 4.6% to 22.6 billion deustchemarks. The carrier stated that it planned to implement a 22% increase in its dividend, from 90 pfennig to 1.10 marks. Analysts believe that the plan was a show of confidence by Lufthansa's management.
