MMC to investigate lenders' snubbing of architects' mortgage valuation work

Article Abstract:

The Monopolies and Mergers Commission is to investigate the procurement of mortgage valuations. Architects who undertake this work have been complaining for some time that mortgage lenders favour valuation work carried out by menbers of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers. The Architect-Surveyors and Valuers Campaign will submit a report to the Commission which should have completed its investigation by Feb 1994.

Small is beautiful

Article Abstract:

Architects Joanna van Heyningen and her husband Birkin Haward prefer to focus on modest projects rather than grand contracts, since this allows them to give the attention to detail for which they famous. Similarly, they do not want to expand their practice too much, in case this affects the quality of their work. They have a particular reputation for educational buildings, and in are great demand now that universities are realising the value of good architecture.

The art of commerce: Michael Squire is a successful commercial architect whose dedication belies narrow assumptions about his field

Article Abstract:

Michael Squire is a commercial architect whose practice is involved in a range of projects including the youth club for the London Docklands Development Corporation, and the refurbishment of the Brunswick Centre. The practice has designed several buildings that are speculative, and Michael Squire feels that the belief by some architects that a speculative building is insignificant, harms architectural education.
