Mac strikes back: in a Windows world, Apple fights to hold on

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer developed several innovative strategies in its uphill battle to retain and build market share in Asia and elsewhere. While its operating system and latest computers may be technically superior to its chief competitors', the latter have capitalized on early piracy of software in Asia and relatively recent developments enabling them to mimic the best features of Apple's Macintosh computers. It won't bite: many shun computers - at their own risk

Article Abstract:

Middle-aged bureaucrats and executives seem the most reluctant to learn to use computers, affecting both their own productivity and the technology decisions they make. Japanese and Chinese executives and high officials are notorious for displaying but not using computers, though some are getting intrigued by what their staff and younger executives can do with them. Falling language barriers and better user interfaces may reduce the problem, but US executives remain far ahead in computer acceptance and use.

The East is wired

Article Abstract:

Several factors have combined recently to power the growth of microcomputer sales throughout Southeast Asia, which reached 38% in 1994 and should average 33% through 2000. Businesses and govt agencies need computers to boost productivity and remain competitive, especially those competing with Western firms. Home use is also surging, thanks to growing incomes and the educational imperative. New software is breaking down language barriers, a major factor for countries using written Chinese.
