Machine politics: KMT veterans block moves for constitutional reform

Article Abstract:

The second stage of Taiwan Pres Lee Teng-hui's political reform program is proceeding very slowly due to efforts of some members of the ruling Kuomintang in connivance with academics and the news media. Lee's reforms are part of a plan of transition from authoritarianism to democracy, and entails strengthening the powers of the presidency and the National Assembly. However, traditional politicians prefer to proceed slowly with reforms, citing reasons of independence and threats from Peking. Slowing down reforms would also allow them to retain their grip on political power.

KMT bares its teeth

Article Abstract:

The Nationalist Party of Taiwan (Kuomintang) threatens to disband the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for its pro-independence party platform. While the Kuomintang (KMT) was tolerant of the DPP's stand during the 1991 election campaign, the election results favoring the ruling party gave the KMT the needed confidence to deal with the opposition party. The DPP's charter violates Taiwan's sedition laws and the 1989 civic organizations law, which forbids pro-independence movements. The DPP plans to seek US support in Mar 1992 by sending delegates to the US.

Run for number one

Article Abstract:

The Dec 1992 elections to Taiwan's Legislative Yuan are being contested by candidates from the Kuomintang (KMT) or ruling party and opposition party candidates from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Many KMT candidates are promoting a provincial and ethnic oriented contest, which may be successful in multiple-seat districts such as Taipei.
