Unfinished business; KMT still evasive over role in 1947 massacre

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's Kuomintang, the Nationalist Party of China, has avoided full disclosure of its role in the Feb 28, 1947, massacre. A political uprising led to an official crackdown and the execution of 18,000 to 20,000 Taiwanese. Taiwan is trying to appease resentment from its citizens by conducting an official investigation on the matter. However, the scholars' report was criticized as incomplete although it placed responsibility on Chiang Kai-shek and his military officers. The government has neither offered an official apology nor compensated the victims' families. The incident has strained relations between Taiwan and mainland China for decades.

Passport politics: dual-nationality ban plagues Taiwan's technocrats

Article Abstract:

Dual citizenship is a hot issue in Taiwan as members of the Kuomintang party point to foreign passports as a sign of mixed loyalties among some would-be officials in Democratic Progressive Party administrations. The problem first arose in the late 1980s when an Australian citizen in Taiwan's legislature turned out to have close links to Beijing. The effort to keep dual citizens out of the govt deprives it of many valuable officials, and any move to extend the ban to ordinary citizens could drain the country's intellectual resources.

Three into one: KMT faces complex challenge in polls

Article Abstract:

The Kuomintang (KMT), or Nationalist Party of Taiwan, is entering a hard campaign for the Nov 1993 general elections. Opposition has grown both within and without the party, and some predict that 50% of the legislative seats could go to opposition candidates. However, KMT Sec General Hsu Shui-teh predicts victory in the polls. He cites the internal discord in the party as proof that it has gotten more democratic.
