Maddening silence

Article Abstract:

Indonesia blames Portugal for its strained relations with the European Community (EC). The problem is rooted in the EC's silence regarding Indonesia's human rights policy in East Timor. The EC strongly criticized Indonesia for the Nov 1991 massacre of a group of mourners in East Timor by government troops. However, Indonesian Pres Suharto's swift action of dismissing two senior military officers involved in the incident was met with silence by the Community. Portugal, being the current leader of the EC, is being accused of using pressure to influence the views of other EC members regarding the East Timor incident.

Stumbling block: Indonesia-EC agreement ditched by Timor issue

Article Abstract:

The new cooperation agreement being negotiated between the EC and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has been opposed by Portugal because of Indonesia's record of human rights violations in East Timor. A demonstration in East Timor, which used to be a Portuguese colony, was violently repressed when Indonesian troops fired on the crowd. Portugal's stand has caused embarrassment to the EC Commission of the European Communities and the UK. Portugal is demanding that Indonesia agree to UN-backed negotiations concerning the East Timor issue.

Accelerated promotion: Indonesia now leads the Non-Aligned Movement

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is the new chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). As NAM head, Indonesia intends to make the movement depart from its political objectives and focus more on the economic concerns of Third World countries. However, not all NAM members favor the abandonment of the movement's political goals. Egypt's Foreign Minister Amre Mousa even recommended that NAM be disbanded to form a more responsive group. Mousa's recommendation paved the way for a serious discussion on how NAM can best serve the interests of its members.
