Made to measure

Article Abstract:

The engineering work of Buro Happold has made a significant contribution to the design of British Airways PLC new headquarters building. Niels Torp's design allows the building to function as a self-sufficient unit. It is near the busy Heathrow Airport but it is sealed from any external noise and the focus of attention is on the glass-covered internal street. The building does, however, incorporate the surrounding gardens, with low windowsills and flush thresholds emphasizing the link. The building houses 3,000 employees but carefully-designed spaces introduce a human perspective.

Making light of steel structures

Article Abstract:

Designers who are interested in minimal weight and low material usage have always been attracted to steel. However, advances in structural analysis have created the potential for structures based on the monococque. Steel plate construction began in the 19th century with large boilers and ships, but 20th century theories permit the safe design of structures including bridges and other forms of architecture.
